After returning from an October visit to St Ives where it felt like August and I wished I'd packed my swimming things - I set out to paint something of what I'd seen and how it made me feel. It was my first visit to St Ives and i noticed how modern it felt which is crazy because the town is a maze of narrow streets lined with tiny and very old fisherman's houses. But everything is super clean and well looked after.
Through my camera lens I noted and recorded the colours, the blue haze of the Autumn sky and particularly the milky appearance and feel of the sea. It wasn't shiny and clear but flat and smooth looking and seemed to move gently, almost slowly. But in the surrounding streets there was so much texture, the lichen on the rooves, the old stone and the new render working together in the housing on the beach fronts. There was a general sleepiness to the town, beaches and hills we walked. And all bathed in the wonderful light that St Ives is famous for.
It was all quite heady and gently over-powering.
